Team reporter Richard van Poortvliet has been reflecting on Russia's fine display last night, suggesting that this ensemble looks even better equipped than the one which reached the semi-finals of UEFA EURO 2008.
There is much debate surrounding how Italy will line up against Spain on Sunday but one thing is almost guaranteed: Daniele De Rossi will be deployed at centre-back. "It is 99.9% certain that I will play in defence," said the AS Roma captain. "It's right that we should adapt and I will play wherever the coach asks me to." Now we just need to work out who he will feature alongside, with Angelo Ogbonna, whom he has played with in training, a candidate for his first start. At left wing-back, one of Federico Balzaretti or Emanuele Giaccherini will get the nod. "It doesn't matter whether I play or he plays," said Balzaretti. "When it comes to Italy you don't think about yourself. Your country comes first."
Last night's results as follows:
Poland 1 - Greece 1
Russia 4 - C.Rep 1
